Window trim is one of those surfaces that defines the finished look of an exterior paint job. Sharp, clean trim work pulls the entire elevation together. Faded, peeling, or sloppy trim work undermines everything else — even on a house where the siding looks great. It is also one of the most technically demanding parts of an exterior project because the margins are tight, the surfaces are often multiple materials, and the prep requirements vary from window to window on the same house.

At Chagrin Falls Painting Company, our team has been doing exterior trim work across Northeast Ohio for over 40 years. Clean lines and careful masking are not an afterthought on our jobs — they are part of how we measure the quality of a finished project.

Why Window Trim Fails Before the Rest of the Exterior

Window trim takes more abuse than siding. The horizontal surfaces — sills, subsills, and head casings — collect water and hold it. In Northeast Ohio that means standing water from rain, snowmelt sitting on the sill through freeze-thaw cycles, and ice forming in the joint between the trim and the window frame. Those are the spots where paint fails first and where wood rot develops when the surface is not properly maintained.

Caulk failure at the window perimeter is the other major factor. When the caulk joint between the trim and the siding or the trim and the window frame opens up, water gets behind the trim and works against the paint film and the wood from the back side. No amount of paint on the face of the trim will hold if moisture is getting in from behind.

South and west facing windows take the most UV and temperature stress and typically show wear before windows on the north and east elevations of the same house.

What Our Window Trim Painting Process Involves

We assess each window’s trim condition individually — checking for paint adhesion, wood condition, and caulk integrity. We discuss any areas of concern with the homeowner before the job proceeds.

Prep includes scraping and sanding loose or failing paint as needed, spot priming bare wood where applicable, and recaulking open joints where applicable before topcoat. Product selection is based on the trim material, existing finish condition, and exposure. Our team takes the time to mask glass and adjacent surfaces carefully so lines are clean and consistent across every window on the home.
