Your garage door is one of the largest single surfaces on the front of your home. On most houses it takes up more visual real estate than the front door, the windows, and the trim combined. A faded, peeling, or dated garage door drags down the entire front elevation regardless of how well the rest of the exterior looks. It is also one of the most commonly skipped surfaces when homeowners repaint — and one of the most common calls we get.
At Chagrin Falls Painting Company, garage door painting is part of our exterior painting work across Northeast Ohio, and it gets the same prep and product consideration as any other surface on the home.

Why Garage Doors Are Harder to Paint Than They Look
The surface type matters more on a garage door than almost anywhere else on the exterior. Steel doors expand and contract significantly with temperature changes, which is extreme in Northeast Ohio where surface temperatures can swing 100 degrees between a January night and an August afternoon. Paint that is not matched to that movement will crack and peel along the panel seams within a season or two.
Wood garage doors present a different set of challenges. Bare or weathered wood needs to be assessed for rot, raised grain, and prior finish condition before any product goes on. Skipping that evaluation is why you see so many wood garage doors with peeling paint blistering off the bottom panels — moisture gets in from below and works its way up.
Embossed steel and fiberglass doors with wood-grain textures require specific application techniques to get paint into the grain without pooling in the recesses or leaving roller stipple on the flat panels.
What Our Garage Door Painting Process Involves
We start with a surface assessment to identify the door material, existing finish condition, and any areas of adhesion failure, rust, or wood damage that need to be addressed before painting.
Prep includes cleaning the surface thoroughly, sanding or scuffing where needed to promote adhesion, spot treating rust on steel doors where applicable, and priming bare or problem areas as needed before topcoat.
We select paint products based on the door material and exposure conditions. A south-facing steel door in full sun gets a different product spec than a shaded wood door on the north side of the house. Application method is chosen based on the door profile — smooth panels, raised panels, and wood-grain textures each respond differently.
Most garage door painting jobs are completed in a single day.
