Shutters are one of the first things people notice when a home’s exterior starts to look tired. Faded, chalky, or peeling shutters pull attention even on a freshly painted house. Because they sit directly against the siding and frame every window on the front elevation, their condition has an outsized impact on overall curb appeal relative to their size.

At Chagrin Falls Painting Company, shutter painting is part of our exterior painting work across Northeast Ohio and one of the more detail-oriented jobs we handle on the outside of a home.

Why Shutters Fail Faster Than Siding

Material matters more with shutters than most homeowners realize. Vinyl shutters — the most common type in Northeast Ohio — are not designed to be painted from the factory. The surface is slick, expands and contracts with temperature, and will reject paint quickly if the surface is not properly prepared and the right product is not used. We see a lot of shutters that were painted with standard exterior latex that are already peeling within a year or two.

Wood shutters present their own challenges. Raised panels, louvers, and tight corners trap moisture and are prone to paint failure at the edges and joints before the flat surfaces show any wear. Any areas of soft wood or prior paint failure need to be addressed before new product goes on, or the same problem resurfaces in the same spots.

Composite and faux wood shutters fall somewhere in between and need to be assessed individually based on their existing finish condition.

What Our Shutter Painting Process Involves

We start by assessing the shutter material and existing finish condition. On vinyl shutters we clean and degrease the surface thoroughly and apply a bonding primer where applicable before topcoat. On wood shutters prep includes sanding back any failing paint as needed, addressing soft spots or prior adhesion failures, and priming bare areas where applicable.

Shutters with louvers require careful attention to get full coverage into the slats without buildup in the corners. We select application methods based on the shutter profile and material to ensure a clean, even finish across the entire surface.

In most cases shutters can be painted in place. Where removal makes more sense based on condition or access, we handle that as part of the job.
